i think it's funny that the decline of the roman empire was mentioned only 77 pages into a 300 page chronological overview of roman history from its beginnings through constantine that i had to read for classics. and this wasn't just an anticipation of what was to come, it was something romans felt was occurring. from what i recall, it was due to the destruction of carthage and, to a lesser extent, corinth.

a Roman fall? a fall of Rome?

i have been speaking and writing English all my life.

You mean barbarians from the north are going to pillage New York and Washington?
You mean a new religion will sweep through the countryside and start to undermine the authority of the government?

there's also this book called The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon. It's kind of important.

so british historians' ideas are valuable just because their empire stole priceless antiquities?

anyway, there's a funny anecdote about ben franklin being denied a meeting with gibbon, upon which franklin remarked that he'd help gibbon with his next work on the fall of the british empire.

The rule is, dont fuck with the Gawths.

I find todays definition of the goths to be highly amusing considering just over a thousand years ago they were running around Europe stomping holes in everyones empire.

the romans fucking suck. all they did was invading other countries for no reason at all (like Hitler and Bush) and stealing art, literature and philosophy. the greeks were a lot smarter than those fucking stupid romans.

BumbleBeeMouth
02-22-2007, 12:00 PM
That may be true, and yes they viewed all non roman as savages, but they probably had a point, heh, when they invaded britain they installed public baths, a system of law, good roads and introduced advanced arable farming techniques. I must say that i was pretty pissed off when i heard about the fall of the roman empire. Especially when the fucking saxons came along and ruined all our shit.

Done to death.

Barbarian hordes ravaging the borderlands, the fact that the Empire had long since spread itself too thin, and an antiquated socioeconomic structure all contributed to the demise of the Roman Empire.

kristin xp
02-22-2007, 02:07 PM
the book i'm reading among 3 others is Western Europe in the Middle Ages: 300-1475

it says that the romans were not creative or advanced enough technologically to support their growing empire and lack of work force. the middle class was becoming non-existent and the only people doing menial agricultural work were slaves that they were running out of. It was noted that the romans were not a 'culture' of creative people but often borrowed from the greek.

"the class that received leased consideration from the government was the class whose productive labor supported the whole superstructure of the state."

THE EMPIRE NEVER ENDED

RenewRevive
02-22-2007, 02:51 PM
The citizens of the empire began opting out, leaving a hollow structure that collapsed in on itself, the shell propped up temporarily by those refusing to accept (or ingorant of) the inevitability of the decline. As spiraling inflation started to become a real problem, the emperors began taking extreme measures, forcing people to remain in the occupation of their fathers, leading to a inflexible economic system and a shrinking birthrate. The central government took whatever it required to fund its bloated bureaucracy and mercenary army (most roman citizens being exempt from service), regardless of the effects this would have, thus generating a large degree of resentment. Corruption amongst roman officials was rife. Barbarian chieftains occupying many provinces began to offer protection to romans against rapacious tax collectors and other government officials, beginning the feudal system and depriving the empire of much of its population and revenue. Many people also entered monastries, rendering them immune from imperial government powers. Essentially, better options were offered to the people and the rigid empire could neither compete nor adapt to the changing environment.
