i feel this is something i've always needed to do. i haven't been across the pond since i was four. and now i'm loaded with cash and the smashing pumpkins are playing in austria.

but......i know nothing about planning an extended trip to a part of the world i've never even been to. i know there people here who have done it who might be able to point me to some resources that might help me plan and budget the trip.

For train timetables, http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en. It's the German rail site, but it's the best European timetable site on the Internet.

To find out what kind of rail pass (if any) is good for your visit, http://www.railsaver.com/railsaver.asp will tell you. You'll need a somewhat set itinerary for it but you can make up what you think you'll do and it will guide you in the right direction.

For lodging (especially in the summer), many universities open their dormitory/ies to travelers. They are cheap, comfortable and sometimes provide free breakfasts.

LonelyPlanet's Thorn Tree forums are a good place to browse information on particular locales. http://www.railsaver.com/railsaver.asp

I have some good sites bookmarked at home, I'll send those your way when session recesses tonight.

GoNomad has some really great tips on freighter travel.

http://www.gonomad.com/transports/0011/miniguide_freighter_voyage.html is a start. That's one thing I've love to do yet have not.
