Craps is probably the hardest game in the casino to play. I strongly suggest finding an online site that let's you play for "fun"

Avoid the sucker bets: Field, "Big Six" or "Big Eight", "Yo" etc. Unless you're high rolling, bet the minimum on the Pass Line and place the rest of the bet you wish to make behind it as odds once the point is set. Damn this is really hard to explain. I have taught a lot of people to play but that's with a live table.

How novice are you?

This has a decent explanation of optimal bets. It will at least give you an idea of what you are getting into and what sucker bets to avoid (mentioned by Nimrod). Outside of that, playing on a fun site for no money is the best way to get a feel for what is going to lose your roll.

Ok. This is a standard craps table:

Ignore evenrything in purple. They're either bad or complicated bets/odds.

Learn everything in blue and how they work. The stickman will help you with odds, etc. Just remember a passline bet is a big house advantage unless you place odds behind.

Basically the house only has an advantage on the Pass/Don't Pass Lines because on a 12, the Pass loses and the Don't Pass pushes. After the Point is set, there is a higher liklihood of a seven being rolled than any other individual number. So, if you place a $5 pass to win $5, the house has a distinct advantage. You negate that over the long term by placing odds after the point is set. They pay more, so on a $10 bet you could win, say, $15 depending on the point. The hardest thing to learn will be how much to put on bets (amounts) to maximize odds. A good rule of thumb is to place odds on a point of 9 and 5 in multiples of $6, and on 10, 4, 8 and 6 in multiples of $5. The odds on the number depends on how far from seven it is, the farther meaning less possible combinations will produce that number. Think of the numbers as pairs - 6 and 8 are both one digit from 7, so they both have the same odds, as do 5 and 9 and 10 and 4.

I'm telling you, download something or play online to get a feel, and then start asking questions.

Best table game, hands down. If you learn how to bet, play smart & bring enough cash to weather a couple bad rolls you can do extremely well. Nothing is more fun than a hot table - everyone winning is wild.

Reading this makes me realize that any casino would own my ass if I walked in.

Dude, this would be lessons one and two in craps basics.

Just stick to blackjack, or baccarat which is the easiest game in the casino
