i don't know enough about movies/advertisements for movies and any correlation between the two and their quality to argue this one way or the other, but i think that using one single example as a technique for disproving a stated generalization is not very effective

Just watched the trailer there and thought it looked pretty cool, first thing I've seen of it.

Just went to grab the comics, here's the links for anyone interested;

Issue 1 of 5

A force of men is assembled, so massive it shakes the earth with its march -- an army, vast beyond imagining, poised to devour tiny Greece, to snuff out the world's one hope for reason and justice. Only three hundred brave souls block its dash. But they are more than men . . . they are Spartans. The first full-color project by Frank Miller for Dark Horse, painted by Lynn Varley (Ronin, The Dark Knight Returns)

Issue 2 of 5

The word is out: Sparta is on the march. From farms and hamlets rally brave Greeks -- to face hellish war in the narrow mountain pass called The Hot Gates. The odds are long, and the stakes are high: All hope for human freedom hangs in the balance!

Issue 3 of 5

Dread Xerxes marshals all the armies of Asia against a tiny, plucky force of 300 Spartans -- and makes one last offer for peace. But peace means surrender. With stabbing spear and slashing sword, the Spartans respond. Their message is a simple one: These free men will not be slaves. There is no middle ground, no compromise to be had, between good and evil.

Issue 4 of 5

Combat. Grueling, hateful, joyous slaughter. The Spartans do what they were born and bred to do: they fight, brother beside brother, shoulder to shoulder, shield against shield, their bristling spears driving back the slaves of the tyrant Xerxes till the dead are piled high as a mountain and the sacred, rocky soil of Greece is drenched deep in Persian blood. Story and art by Frank Miller, painted color by Lynn Varley.

Issue 5 of 5

Betrayed, surrounded, outnumbered a hundred thousand to one, the Spartans make their last stand against the hordes of Xerxes. All hope is surely lost: only bloody death awaits them. Why, then, that wild, joyous light in the eyes of King Leonidas? What secret has he that makes him smile and speak so confidently of victory?

I got the graphic novel for Christmas... it looks to be another "straight from the book" movie, much like Sin City. I'm really looking forward to it.

I am interested as to why you would think someone who happened to be gay would have some sort of genetic predisposition to dislike those movies, I'm a fan of both. The messageboard on my site is goodfellas themed.

Well I think it's because your boyfriend is the wife. You're still pretty dudely, you're just into other dudes.

Homosexual relationships still fall into traditunal hetero roles, there's a masculine and a feminine, usually. The lesbians I know are just like that, the butch watches football, likes drinking at bars, and dresses like a dude and the femme likes clothes, shoes, and going to dance clubs.

yeah i guess you replied before I edited. I know a lesbian couple. I don't really know any gay couples, but I do know dudely gay dudes and effeminite ones.

In my experience, when it's two guys together, it tends to be more toward the extremes - you'll get two camp guys or two 'butch' guys, although that sounds awful, i prefer dudely gay dudes.. I've known very few couples who are butch/camp.

Anyway yeah, I doubt you could find a "guy's movie" I'm not a fan of, I'd say the best one in recent months was Crank which was pretty hilarious. But I'm a fan stuff like Ong Bak / Tom Yum Goong and of all the old ones as well like predator. I'm not a fan of frat type movies though generally, although it's probably more of a cultural thing. I really didn't like Old School.

That battle as described in textbooks seemed like some real heroic feat.

i was going to make a thread about this, it looks pretty sweet.

i hadn't heard about the real battle beforehand but it sounds interesting. funnelling a million Persians into a single pass so they could pick them off one by one.

I like the part in the trailer: "Our arrows will blot out the sun!" - "Then we will fight in the shade."
