View Full Version : just read the section in the sharon osbourne book where she discusses SP

I know this was a thread previously on this board but there were a couple things that were not mentioned that totally floored me.. it's in the "ozzfest" chapter of her autobiography, and for about two pages she discusses when she got back into management, her first job was with SP. Here she talks about how at first Billy was great but suddenly turned into an "alien" before her eyes. Some highlights-->

*Says Billy did not need a manager seeing as he had a personal assistant that did everything for him, he could not be reached without having reached this woman first. Basically she did all of the "get me this or that" bull shit or the "book me a massage." Sharon says if he was the typical brad pitt she would have found this normal, but he was a walking lightbulb in trousers.

*He was nasty to press, record execs, etc etc.

*For the SIYL video, she argued about the dresses the band was wearing, saying that they couldn't do it because they were spending a ridiculous amount of money, and that they looked stupid in the dresses (which i agree with). I'm also sure that as a manager, she most likely got a percentage cut of their profits minus expenses, and these expenses were directly out of the band pocket, so in that case she probably had a justified reason to bitch).

*Here's the interesting one that was not mentioned that completely shocked me.. On Billy's tour rider (for Machina 2000), he wanted the tour promoter in each city to go out into the city to find the 10 ugliest people and put them in the audience during the shows. Sharon's response to this was "If this gets out in the press, it will be hell, what is it for?" Billy's response "It's Art."

Now was he so into his character persona that he even acted it out on his managers and associates or is he really this insane (if it's even true)?

There's another case where he tells sharons daughter to go fuck her self when she askes him to move at a restaurant when she wants to get back to her table after getting back from the bathroom, and that's the point when sharon quit, bought everyone in the bar drinks and charged them all to Billy's room.. she also charged the plane tickets for her flight back home to billy's accounts.

but the ten ugliest people bit.. wtf?

No, it's not.

In this passage, she said that after she quit the band "Ultimately broke up that may." Without mentioning the fact that the band intended to break up all along and that they actually continued to tour for the rest of that year, so obviously she twists things around in her story.

we may make jokes, but face it that the audiences in 2000 and since have looked drastically different from the people who saw them in the early '90s, and i imagine he is not comfortable playing to a room full of middle-class norms, children and child-like entities and their parents and guardians, and clueless posers. you know, nothing against them so much, but he's always sung to the outsiders, because that's who he is, and as much as he may appreciate the pretty faces, it's not unimaginable that he may feel at times like they're getting in the way. if a little gesture like this made him feel like maybe on that night he had the chance to make a connection to someone who's lost in the world, who's been dealt a less than ideal hand, and if that smallest of hopes helped him put an ounce more of himself into a show, then i think we can all find it in ourselves to forgive him this.

I seriously can't tell if you're taking the piss or if tpq now has you brainwashed to the point of believing that billy is this omnipotent supergenius.

Do you think if you met him and he said "I'm away to take a shit" and you responded with "GREAT IDEA BILL! What is your plan here? I'll go out on a limb and say that you're attempting to clear out your bowels in order to put less internal pressure on your chakras, and with that pressure removed you will surely write a rock epic, like shining mercury raining from the stars, making my heart pound with the rhythm of a high speed locomotive, capturing our hearts and minds in a pink coral shell of fragile beauty and delight" - do you think he would get on with you?

ok, valid question there. my answer: either james and darcy come out of the woodwork at the last moment and there's a whole melodrama about how its great that they're back. have you ever seen the film Still Crazy? i think its got billy connolly in it. well its about this rock band who're doing a reunion but their reclusive main man who's a bit of a syd barrett type is in a home from a long-term breakdown. but when the band reunites and has a new singer, guitarist etc, the main dude comes on at the end for the chorus and everyone's like woo, great. classic emotional cheesy rock comeback. that is absolutely what billy is trying to do here by suppressing any info about james/darcy. if they're not in from the get go, i expect we'll experience a sort of second zwan phase where some stand-in musicians, probably two girls, will play with them until billy deems them immoral and james and darcy decide they want in.

ChristHimself!

Izzle
01-19-2007, 05:15 AM
well i'd never seriously suggest he'd set something in stone since the beginning. well, unless he sold his soul to the devil or something. i think its more like he's had a very general plan of all the different accomplishments he wants to make with the band, and he's just gone out of his way to try and do all of them even if they're totally unnecessary. ie cheesy rock comeback, quasi-serious prog-rock mystery mumbo jumbo, audacious double cd concept album just to defy expectations of what sp was capable of at that stage in their career, just because he knew it would work...i don't really know why he'd do it, but it seems to me that he just wants to redefine every bombastic rock cliche there is. just because it tallies up on the band's profile and makes things more interesting. that's all.

if you really want to see everything as a plan, then i think this plan you speak of grew over the years.

i don't think there was a bunch of stuff billy wanted to do with the band idea and then he just got started completing it, step by step.

i think most of the things that are now part of the plan were added only after the previous step was finished. and that lots of things were added as they happened. which kinda makes it less of a plan, since a plan is usually made before you start, right?

well billy's always said he had the idea for the smashing pumpkins long before there was even a band. i think that idea goes beyond just the band name though- i think he at least had the basic ideas for each of the successive records he wanted to make, and probably did alot to engineer the way he wanted his band to be perceived by the public. by that i mean i think its very possible that he more or less pre-conceived the way sp would evolve artistically from era to era, but in a way that each era would also be relevant to their personal evolution as a band in the context of the changing musical culture around them.

correct me if i'm wrong here, but it seems if you boil this down to its basic meaning, you're just saying: "bill decided ahead of time that the band would be different in different periods of time. and the band in each period would be influenced by what was going on with the band members, and with culture around them"

that's a very far cry from a master plan. that's like saying "i'm going to go down the route of eating this apple. i've decided that the apple will actually change throughout the process. it will change in such a way that what's happening to the apple will play a part in the apple's existence. when it's in my mouth, it'll get crushed up by teeth. when it's in my stomach, it'll start to get digested, etc."

whether you "decide" that from the start or not, it's just what's naturally going to happen.

ah, you've missed my point a little bit- here's a better analogy for what i was getting at. billy sees music, his band, the culture, the business, as something like a game of chess, and thinking about as much as he does, he's largely played that game out already in his head. so far at least, he managed to pre-emptively designate courses of action he/sp might take based on whatever happens to the band incidentally. some examples, if you're interested:

other bands playing quiet? -> play loud
getting some serious attention? -> make next record more commercial
established and popular? -> exercise your power. obliterate everyone with mcis+tafh (which bc probably cooked up many moons ago)
band tragedy/member loss? -> make solo/acoustic record (or, sort of a what-goes-up-must-come-down situation re: mellon collie)
last record flops for whatever reason? -> get back to safety of what you used to do (ie rock) but play with public perceptions of band (ie gatmog stuff) gaining attention via controversy (ie machina 1 effectively alienating public, but machina 2 suggesting the band are somehow better than other bands because they gave it away for free).
band splits/takes a break? -> start cooking up awesome comeback album. use jokey christian pop rock band project as a front to further alienate people from your true intent.
and if/when that band fails? -> get around to experimental solo record, attempt to publicly reestablish your musical credibility and influence. keep working secretly on band comeback.
need to make a successful comeback record? -> recycle successful elements of past work, synthesise it (thereby still creating an original sound), add a revolutionary vibe to go with the hype (new record allegedly has some vaguely political edge).
if it fails? -> won't
if it succeeds? -> run for political office (ie mayor b0lly of chicago), get married, fix world, kiss babies and keep being frugal in general. continue musical legacy by releasing metro dvd, chicago songs etc because you hardly have time to play anymore.
and after that? i dunno, go on vacation

last record flops for whatever reason?
-> recycle successful elements of past work, synthesise it (thereby still creating an original sound), add a revolutionary vibe to go with the hype (new record allegedly has some vaguely political edge).
if it fails? -> won't
if it succeeds? -> run for political office (ie mayor b0lly of chicago), get married, fix world, kiss babies and keep being frugal in general. continue musical legacy by releasing metro dvd, chicago songs etc because you hardly have time to play anymore.
and after that? i dunno, go on vacation
youre not serious are you? i hope you were just mocking- not actually trying to make a point, here.

wow, first great netphorian thread I read in awhile...

I firmly agree with you Izzle...everything of SP, since the beginning was planned. However, I was thinking earlier today in work that eventually, as "SP2" grows and becomes bigger, I was thinking in some sick-twisted manner how BC (instead of running for political office and getting married) would "die". Thus, like Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain, his name would grow bigger and albums like Chicago songs, Metro DVD and others would get released. America's media eats dead celebrities. For example, take Manson's view of celebritarianism..."A person isn't worshipped in life like how they are in death."

well billy's always said he had the idea for the smashing pumpkins long before there was even a band. i think that idea goes beyond just the band name though- i think he at least had the basic ideas for each of the successive records he wanted to make, and probably did alot to engineer the way he wanted his band to be perceived by the public. by that i mean i think its very possible that he more or less pre-conceived the way sp would evolve artistically from era to era, but in a way that each era would also be relevant to their personal evolution as a band in the context of the changing musical culture around them.
i think that billy indeed had a plan before there even was a band. like you say and like billy also mentioned, it in<fuck>cluded the idea of what kind of band it was going to be and "gish" was in there too. i don't think it went any further than that though.

How could he seriously have planned all that? Every music fan has dreams about their band taking over the world. He may look back and want to say how it was planned or that the art of it was crafted. I can see a bunch of high people "planning" to be arty or act a certain way in interviews and onstage. I'm certain he's strong willed and intelligent enough to control the whole situation. It seems a little far fetched to plan to be a huge success, then dwindle away, and then years later make a giant comeback. It'd be funny if he pulled that off though!

He was young and his bitch manager had her fucking kids running around acting like spoiled brats--any normal person would grow to despise them because kids don't belong in that setting. Sharon probably gave them tons of rules to follow about how to treat her kids.

obviously it was a test for all the true fans to oust the 10 fakes by the end of the show and he didn't want them to be too obvious. but we failed and Billy has been righteously and justly punishing us ever since.

*Says Billy did not need a manager seeing as he had a personal assistant that did everything for him, he could not be reached without having reached this woman first. Basically she did all of the "get me this or that" bull shit or the "book me a massage." Sharon says if he was the typical brad pitt she would have found this normal, but he was a walking lightbulb in trousers.

billy is better looking than brad pitt  ...unconventionally speaking of course

pumpkins fan are either REALLY attractive or REALLY not...there's no in between with us

i remember billy actually saying once in an interview how the majority of his fans are overweight 14 year old girls...or something like that

nope... it was her daughter amy, she got up to go to the bathroom, when she came back she excused herself to get back to her seat to which billy said "go fuck yourself, i'm not moving."

well if that's 100% accurate (doubtful) than i guess it's understandable why her sister kelly badmouths B. so much

I disagree with the idea SO had any right to bitch if Corgan decided to spend all the profits on his artistic vision if he so chooses. If she required a certain amount for her services she could have negotiated a flat fee. If she wanted the chance of maximum potential benefit banking on a successful (commercial) resurgance of the band she would also have had to accept the risk of expenditures outpacing income.

There's another case where he tells sharons daughter to go fuck her self when she askes him to move at a restaurant when she wants to get back to her table after getting back from the bathroom, and that's the point when sharon quit, bought everyone in the bar drinks and charged them all to Billy's room.. she also charged the plane tickets for her flight back home to billy's accounts.

but the ten ugliest people bit.. wtf?

I guess her band o gut removal wasnt big enough news to even catch the attention of the numbnuts, so she is back trying to ride on billy's already riddled coat tails. I mean we all knew ozzy had no brain, and then seeing it confirmed was comical for about two seconds. Seeing she has no life other than the half life she has claimed from ozzy, how much less will she get from this pathetic attempt? There is no question Billy was fucking with her, I can see him cracking up about this now.

i have a friend of a relative who worked at a venue, and i guess the reason a lot of times that they put wacky shit like that on their list of demands is so that if they decide they don't want to play that night, they can get out of it by saying "YOU DIDN'T GET ME 700 BAGELS SLICED IN TO HALVES AND SOAKED FOR FOUR DAYS IN PICKLE JUICE! The only part of this which reflects badly on Billy is the fact that he choose that stupid whore to be his manager in the first place. BC could slice her nose off for all I care, I think it would be not only justified, but fun too! What's that rubbish she complains about? Hell, when it comes to finding ugly people, that bitch has a head start. Especially without a nose. From what I remember about her zombiefied husband, in his prime, he was biting the heads off little defenceless birds.. I suppose according to this lying, deformed little lebrechaun ,he was just a little.. peckish.
