I need a turntable. I've never bought a new turntable, only used old ones. Affordability is my main concern, but I also want it to not completely suck balls. There are several of them on musiciansfriend.com for $99, but I really know nothing about them. Someone please point me in the right direction.

Spend the extra 50 bucks and get a direct-drive.

it's like a 3 foot red and white rca cable. depending on what your setup is like, you might need an extension cable, but that's only like $5

does it have a 1/4 ir 1/8" output on the back, or does it only have the wire stereo thing?

only the audio rca cable. does the system your plugging it into have a headphone jack? mine has a 1/4", but it's from like 1975, i dont know if they do that anymore.

i actually just wanted to use the creative sound system that i use with my computer. the sub plugs into my computer with a 1/4" cable.

well maybe you could try get one of these or something (http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/sound-card/creative-front-panel-audigy-2-zs-internal-i-o-drive/) it has 1/4", rca, and spdif in's and out's. very handy.

at the $100 level i don't think you're going to find too many turntables with 1/4" or 1/8" outs though

i think i can just use an rca to 1/4" adaptor. thanks for the help all

well it's a deal then. vanns.com sells it much cheaper though.

also, has anyone experienced any problems from an RCA to 1/8" converter like this? (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103859&cp=&origkw=rca***%2F8%22&kw=rca***%2F8&parentPage=search)
I want to use it to play the turntable through my Creative computer speakers (they only use 1/8").

ive actually used something like that to run my ipod through some speakers.. just don't mess with the miniplug too much when it's in use and you should be good.

yeah but do you think it works ok going the other way, RCA from the turntable to 1/8" plug into the back of my subwoofer?

i don't see why it would be a problem. as long as the 1/8" plug on your subwoofer is an input and not an output it should be fine.

i owned the first one that was linked in this thread for about twenty four hours. it was 140 at best buy. i came home with it and it sounded just. fucking. perfect. then i suffered from a little but of buyer's remorse...mostly stemmed from the fact that i'm broke. so i returned it.

then i bought a used one for a quarter the price on ebay. it sounds good, but i sure wish i had the sony one instead. mostly for the fact that it's probably much easier to find replacement needles. and that it is fully automatic. and that it has a sony warranty on it. like it's going to break ever.

Direct drive vs belt drive

Belt drives use a belt (duh) and when that belt begins to wear (or even as it gets broken in) you'll notice speed and pitch differences. You'll get the "worble" effect. Also with belt drives the platter tends to give a lot more also creating that "worble" sound.

If you're going to go with a lower end turntable I'd recommend getting a Numark direct drive turntable which can range from $99-$500 depending on quality.

To be honest you should just cough up the $200-$250 and get a technics 1200 off of ebay. You'll never have to replace it if you're just using it for playing (ie you're not djing and fucking with pitch adjust, back-cueing, etc)

I had my first pair for 5 years and wore the shit out of them and had zero issues. I upgraded to MK5's last year and the turntables were still in excellent condition

Never played on one... for the price you could just get a good Numark or Stanton
