I don't like hiphop where the direction of the song changes like *clicks fingers* that - ie. beastie boys, and I'm sorry to say I'm not feeling most of the wutang's stuff.
I'm happy to listen to stuff with killer flows, I've grown to really love Nas (illmatic especially, never really got the love for it was written) I like really grimey tracks as well as total chillout, lay back and BLAZE IT UHH tracks.
Love Dre. Love Nas. Love Biggie. Really like some of tupac's stuff. Del is ok. DMX is ok. Not too keen on banks/g units stuff but I am a closet 50 cent fan, especially his earlier mixtapes. Power of the Dollar is excellent. Kanye doesn't do much for me at all and neither did what I've heard from Common.
I am having a lot of trouble getting into Jay Z.. but everyone puts him alongside biggie and nas as far as east coast rappers go. Any track suggestions?
Any other folk I should check out? I'm sure Talib and Pharoah Monche will be mentioned, I keep meaning to get round to them...

i'm not a connoisseur but my friend loves Nas and DMX and he also likes Big Punisher
he's not everybodies cup of tea, but if you like some intelligent wordplay and slick flow then check out anything by Sage Francis and/or Non-Prophets (his collab with Joe Beats). actually, anything Anticon crew is generally sweet.
i reccomend Personal Journals.

Yeah, personal journalist or escape artist by Sage Francis are lyrical masterworks
"and turn this big bang theory into a small pop hypothesis"
I personally love a bit of jurassic 5, charlie tuna has a great voice, plus the backing is funky. Swing set is cool.
Dj Format is quality too, i think his signature songs are alphabetaerobics and ill culinary behaviour. but i like my hip hop with hammond organs and funky bass beats.
Rascal for the format what?!

also, it's rap, not hip hop.. but you might want to check out Brotha Lynch Hung. some of his material is pretty spotty and I haven't listened to it in ages, but it may be something you'd enjoy.

Dilated Peoples- Big Business
no questions
I pledge resistance to the grass
that hides the snakes of America
so they watch it, now I walk with caution
more careful put more thought to options
Is the opposite of progress Congress?
From the school to the street we're beyond stress
but I fight for peace, that's what the problem is
war is big biz, ask an economist
speak in volumes callin' anti-war and anti-American synonymous
Back in the day I would've gotten black listed just for speakin' up
Hoover probably would've screamed Communist!
I want black and brown unity
but cats get out to bring the jail to the community
Fightin's nothin' new to me
I even corrected what the public school system tried to do to me
Here's a spark encoded in rhyme and love for everyone of the devoted in line...
We call it art, some call it a crime
it's the rap Michael Moore, like Bowling for Columbine
on drums, Fahrenheit, 9-1-1
Al Queda hit the Apple and the world was stunned
the villain trained by the hero for the killing
now you twist $20 bills to see buildings
Under heavy surveillance
they might call you a traitor if you want something greater
Don't get me wrong, America's a great place to live
just listen to the knowledge I give
if more than half the budget goes to military spending
less than half goes to whatever it's defending
One nation, many gods, individuals with liberties
and justice for all who are miserable

I wear my scars like the rings on a pimp
I live life like the captain of a sinking ship
The one thing that i can guarantee
I'm like a stepping razor, i suggest you stay fair with me
Been payin dues for a decade plus,
Before that i was just another face on the bus
Tappin my foot, to the beat on the radio
Dreamin 'bout the mic and the money and the ladies
Oh mom, i promise im gonna be large
Someday im gonna stop tryin to borrow your car
Gonna go far, with charisma and skill
Until they put my face on a million dollar bill
Atmosphere, its just a ten letter word
Discretion is the name of my cement-feathered bird
And if you didnt hear, fuck whatevers heard
I think you got the sickness i suggest you get it cured
Caught up in the mix, of a bottle full of fix
Im gonna hobble down the street 'til i reach knob creek
Its not that i dont like you, i just dont wanna speak
You fuckin freak
Now keep your days out my week
The world keeps a balance, through mathematics
Defined by whatever youve added and subtracted
Im pushin on the hammer, to trigger the brain
Embrace how i live it, god loves ugly
[chorus]
God loves ugly...
Once upon a time in minneapolis, yo
I damn near had to steal the show
I stepped on the stage, who is it?
My names slug ive come to kill a couple minutes
Whats up with the way, that everybody gathers around each
other
So they can steal each others sound
If its all about gettin down with the get down
How long i gotta wait for these fools to sit down?
Appears more clear in its simplest form
Nobody sees tears when youre standing in a storm
Abandoning the norm, and handling the harvest
Measuring the worth by the depth of the hardships
I welcome all the hatred you can aim at my name
I held on to the sacred ways of how to play the game
When the soldiers started runnin short on rations
I began tappin the egg, to spark the hatchin
Make it happen
And take this captain to the gallows
I keep steerin us into an area thats shallow
Talkin to my shadow, he advised me not to worry
He said i should plant my tree and let it rise out of the
fury
So give me some light, a little love and some liquid
Im gonna creep through the night
And put a plug in the spigot
And when the water grows
And the dam starts to overflow
Ill float atop the flood, holding on to my ugly
[chorus]
Why scream, when you can lose yourself inside the wide-screen
Let life be a bowl of melted ice cream
Or be the deer thats caught in my high beams
Im rollin with the lights on, scared stiff
Reality is just too much to bear with
Paranoid, walkin around careless
No wonder youre in love with your therapist
Go to sleep my little time bomb

Atmosphere - The Woman With The Tattooed Hands Lyrics
[verse 1]
I used to know this woman who had the most beautiful
tattoos on the top sides of both of her hands
she was forty three years old and as far as I know
had never yet been with a man
its not that she wasn't attractive she was beatiful
but its the way that she interacted
she was aggressively passive to the point where she
would of intimidated any mitt that ever tried to catch her
on the right hand she had a tattoo of a nude girl
she claimed it is what God resembled
but on the left she had a mirrored image of the same female
and this one she explained looked like the devil
I remember once watching her touch her own breasts
how the tattoos smiled as they stared down her stomach
as if anticipating would they be allowed to caress
the sweet flower that they both seemed to hunger (sweet
flower)
now maybe I was high but it felt so right
heaven and hell both take to this womans womb
it didn't make sense how she could commence
touching herself with me wide awake in the same room
now if I've learned anything in my years (my years)
I learned I no longer believe in surprise (in surprise)
but what happened next damn near stole my tears
the tattoos came alive right in front of my eyes
they both slowly stood up and climbed off her hands
and showed me why she never took some time with a man
they climbed deep inside of this woman's garden
she closed her eyes and she gently bit her bottom lip
I stepped I left and I don't regret leaving
and I'll never forget all the things I saw that evening
a glimpse of religion a piece of coming closer
to understanding more about what intrigues me most
I didn't get turned on I just got turned
I wasn't as aroused as I was concerned
for each one of em I've hurt
and every time I've been burned
I've got a lot to teach but even more to learn
so now I keep my eyes open hoping to take in all I can
about Woman taking in all she can
and for as long as I breath i'll save a seat in my memory
for that woman with the tattooed hands
[chorus: repeat 5x till song fades]
There's good and evil in each individual fire
identifies needs and feeds our desires
as long as we keep our spirit inspired
she can bite her bottom lip all she wants

Atmosphere - Guns And Cigarettes Lyrics
[Slug:]
(What's your name foo?)
Rappers steppin' to me
They wanna get some
But most of them should go and try to boost their monthly
income
Speaking over beats is the only time I feel complete
I don't hear the weak and I don't fear defeat
So what you got?
Connect the dots, I'll raise the pot
Remove the blood clot from the brain of hip hop
The name remains in tip-top shape
I'm still the back rapper scapegoat in the aim of their hate
I came in late, took a chair in the rear
But my classmates were unaware how long I'd really been there
My peers have been held back for years, holding back the
tears
Everybody knows our name like we was the cast from "Cheers"
So here's to the good times, tonight is mighty special
So fasten your seatbelts, cause I'm gonna launch this vessel
Ain't gonna land until I'm bigger than Espo
And bigger than ecstasy and bigger than techno
[Chorus:]
I wanna bigger than Jesus and bigger than wrestling
Bigger than the Beatles and bigger than breast implants
I'm gonna be the biggest thing to hit these little kids
Bigger than guns, bigger than cigarettes
A few years ago an ex-girl of mine
Asked me to keep her name out of my rhymes
So I said this rhyme that I'm about to say
It came from the heart and it went this way:
Go to hell girl, you make me sick!
I hope your new boyfriend gets cancer in his dick
What the fuck makes you think I'd put your name on my record?
there, now I feel a lot better
You know what?
I ain't drank a forty since I became old enough to drink
Not caught up in what the fuck these people think
Cause when I die they're gonna find the missing link
But tonight I'm gonna vomit it in the kitchen sink
I'm suprised more of y'all don't get hit by cars
Missing your surroundings, staring at the stars
I'm lonely without a woman that wants to spar
That's why I spend so much time in these bars
Drunk poolside, screaming, "Do or die!"
Looking at the water asking, "Who am I?"
Saw my reflection, Yes! I'm super fly!
And as you can guess again, I'm too damn high
[Chorus]
(What'd they say to you?)
But they said, "Drop dead."
I can't, I got a lot left
More than just another arrogant, asshole pot-head
In the top ten, who you love to hear on tracks
Smiling for the camera while I surf upon your ear wax
This beer's flat and she kisses like a stripper
I'm coming to terms with my status as a drifter
Girl, I'm only in this town for one night
And these neon lights are keeping me distracted from my
plight
I feel like a legend on a leash
Making an effort to break every piece that I can reach
Yeah, I got something to say, and even more to teach
But first let me scrape these feces from my cleats
Standing on the roof, complaining to the moon
The only time I tell the truth is when I'm naked in my
bedroom
Soon I'm gonna reap the harvest of my struggles
But from now on, y'all can call me sluggles
[Chorus]
Bigger than Jesus
Bigger than wrestling
Bigger than the Beatles
Bigger than breast implants
[x2]
Bigger than guns, bigger than cigarettes

No I'm angrier that you have a boyfriend, and may indeed reproduce. At least the kids won't have hair for a while before you start to fuck them up with your 'style' tips.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense.
Should we recommended music we don’t like? Usually if someone asks for your opinion on something, it’s based on your own tastes.
Should we get in here saying, ‘Oh, someone told me this is pretty good, but I wouldn’t know cause I haven’t heard it’ or ‘Yeah, I don’t particularly like this music, but hey, why don’t you give it a shot there buddy and see what it does for you?’
OR!
When someone asks for recommendations, you think about what you enjoy putting on, which music you like, and think, ‘Maybe he’ll enjoy it too, cause I do’ and tah-dah.
Trotskilicious
07-27-2006, 03:07 AM
No, actually. I enjoy Wu-Tang, but I know it's not for everyone. I reccomended ATLiens and Aquemini because based on what he posted because I think he would enjoy that. I didn't reccomend him Handsome Boy Modeling School or Dr. Octagon becaue I really don't think he would like it.

Like if someone was looking for reccomendations for rock music and they said they've only really listened to ZZ Top and AC/DC and they fucking loved it, telling them to check out the new Bright Eyes album would be a bad reccomendation.

I can't relate to hip hop really... I guess its my ethnic background..although Paul, you like it.. was your area of glasgow rough?
ChristHimself!
07-27-2006, 06:04 AM
I'm from burnside which is hardly rough, but borders with some dodgy areas like Eastfield, Blairbeth, Fernhill etc (which in turn borders with Castlemilk) went to school in Govanhill which has a bit of a bad reputation due to past gang activity and borders with Toryglen and the Circus at Prospecthill, which was reportedly the capital of europe for hard drug users per head of the population at one point. All on the south side, where the poor people live :p
Still, it's hardly the ghetto, as you know, although people get killed in glasgow, it's usually by blades or bricks rather than glocks. I still enjoy listening to hip hop though, the beats, the production and the lyrical acrobatics are often really impressive and I was drawn to some of it since it was one of the few genres of music that I'd discovered myself rather than finding it through friends.
Hip hop tracks that are chilled out enduce a completely different state of mind for me than guitar based bands', more 'cool' than relaxing (eg. Nas - It Ain't Hard to Tell;). Some hip hop stuff just has this plain dirty sound to it (eg. Saul Williams - Telegram) and some of it is just so violent that it's cathartic to listen to (eg. Biggie - Dead Wrong). And if you're having a puff then I can't think of a genre that produces better tracks to smoke to than the genre that produced tracks like Life's a Bitch, Xplosive, Krazy etc.
I think it's a genre that, beside some generalising blanket statements people make, has escaped being pigeonholed as related to one emotion - so called alt rock is often seen as being depressing, as is country, metal is seen as being hate filled, pop as being shiny and over chirpy. Certain hip hop artists have proved that it can be all these things, which is pretty awesome.
Kahlo
07-27-2006, 06:07 AM
oh yes , Saul Williams I have seen hima few time snow and bought his last album..pretty good stuff.
Saw him in Edinburgh, and was supposed to Interview him, but time constraints sadly stopped it - he is an intelligent guy.
And aye, some bits of glasgow are pretty scary...
ChristHimself!
07-27-2006, 06:12 AM
I've only seen Saul supporting NIN at the barralands. I really liked his approach to hip hop but I think they might have been late getting along to the venue or something because their sound was absolutely dire, which I've never seen happen with anyone else at the barras.

Here. This is Brother Ali's Shadows On The Sun. If you like lyrical acrobatics, this guy is great. I think he's definitely one of the more underrated artists and he's pretty much only known because of Atmosphere - but the first time I saw this guy in concert he made me cry. He's so emotional and spiritual and soulful - not to mention he can string together some pretty great rhymes.
"On stage with only a DJ, Ali's magical gift for capturing the imagination of his audience has been compared to that of a gospel preacher. His voice, large stature and albino features make him a unique and commanding presence."

Anyway I'm not so sure if you'd like Aesop Rock - the beats and flow are a little more abstract...but hey I love him, it took me a little while to get into him but his lyrics are pretty mindblowing as well - I'm more of a lyrics person too, but if I can ever find Lucy to add to the cd, I'll send you Labor Days. If you find it on soulseek before I do, download it. Daylight and Lucy and 9-5ers Anthem are great tracks!

no, but I have been raised in a background both devoid and opposed to hip hop.. it has never been a part of my background (no blacks in scotland).
my comment about rough areas was tough in cheek you daft cunt.
What the hell kind of sense does that make? You didn't ever get into hip hop because you didn't see any black people?!
Uh believe it or not, a lot of MCs are white. Hell, even one of them we suggested is albino :D And a lot of the subject matter has nothing to do with rough neighborhoods or even rough lives.
You don't need to be around blacks to get into hip hop - just um, a sense of adventure? Jesus christ.

again the no blacks in scotland comment was tongue in cheek.. still, I'm glad to see you can now type on the keyboard rather than smear crayon across the monitor. Oh and I do like various hip hop acts, but the genre overall doesn't really do anything for me.
