If you guys didn't notice, I havent been around for the past couple days.

My company is located throughout california, and my boss took me and a couple other newish engineers on a tour of some of the southern/central california operations so we could get a better feel for the company.

There are some pictures to follow and they wont be 1.6MB sppunk pictures.

we flew into the ontatio airport and then drove down into the desert, it was about a million degrees. I thought it was very pretty though. We stayed in palm springs for the night though so that was nice.

by the way the story of the salton sea is so surreal to me, I find it very interesting. I kind of wanted to go visit it to see the deserted shit but I dont think the other people in the car were excited about that idea

Then we drove up north near santa barbara and saw some other quarries

and went to a beach!

there was a quarry there that causes the company a lot of headache because it's in a very liberal area. there is someone that sits at the end of the road to make sure noone drives up the quarry. apparently michael jackson's neverland ranch is a small ways down the road if that puts it into perspective

the quarry is totally hidden from view from the road though, it's on the back side of a ridge.

hey casey why dont you come on AIM anymore? there is something i'd like to discuss with you.

bardy
07-14-2006, 06:47 PM
what are they mining there?

they are all just various rocks. some limestone, some granite, maybe some other shit.

most are just to support the local concrete people, and the company's own construction jobs. some of the places had hot plants so they could make their own asphalt.

some of the operations produced a lot of sand--one even made a really nice golf course sand

and they are relatively small operations. I think ranging from 250,000 tons a year to about a million

it was technically scotts valley or felton, which is more inland, but it was beautiful

is that just a quarry?

thats a pretty traditional looking mine, the benches look a bit narrow but I don't really know how tall they are and what size equipment they are using.

also I dont really know how they are processing it, a lot of quarries that are that large will have an inpit crusher to minimize the size of the rocks that are exiting the quarry and put them on a conveyor, but that mine looks pretty steep so I don't know

I havent had a lot of experience with ones like that, but it looks pretty typical. it'll make a nice lake when it's done

Its a gold mine. There is an underground mine underneath it and a town around it so that might be why it is so steep.

Thanks for your input.
