View Full Version : I'll Make a Brutally Honest Prediction About Tonight's Stanley Cup Game 7 Final:

Edmonton may keep it close. It may be a one-goal game. It may even go to overtime. But Carolina simply will not lose.

History is against Edmonton in a major way.

Only 2 teams have ever one game 7 on the road in the NHL Final.

And only a handful of teams have come back from 3-1 down in the NHL Finals.

Expecting that both scenarios will happen in the same game is just very wishful thinking.

I've got Carolina winning 4-2.

edmonton are like 6 and 2 in game 7's. anything can happen in a single hockey game. it just takes a couple of bounces. first team to score will win the game.

Boner

The home team is 11-2 in Stanley Cup Game 7s.

cam ward will have a shaky first period, only settling down after his team is already down.

i disagree. History is meaningless, it's just statistics. Doesn't prove which team is better in the '06 playoffs.

the cup should have already been won by edmonton. that first game was just a fluke. what a stupid game that was.

edmonton 3 carolina 1. (if they are lucky to get a shot on goal)

DeadOpera

i should have really said, because of the different rules this year, those statistics are meaningless.

why? they have all the momentum.

neopryn
06-19-2006, 05:03 PM
yeah, but if momentum was that important teams would come back from 3-1 all the time. seems that most of the time when in a situation like this the team that had the lead recovers in the cluth. hope i'm wrong.

DeadOpera

it is pretty important. i mean, look how many days off the oilers had (compared to the canes) waiting for those carolina games to finish before the stanely cup. The first few games of the SCC, the oilers were sluggish. Seems to me they have their game back. Let's just hope Jussi continues to play well.

yeah, and since expansion, when the home team blows a 3-1 lead, they're 8-11 in game 7. but no one ever mentions that one.

Anyway, all those past stats are meaningless tonight.

How's this for a good omen? Fernando Torres of the Spanish national team scored 2 goals today. I think that means Pisani and Raffi are due for four between them tonight. Last time the Spanish Torres scored, Pisani had one goal and Raffi had one assist.

Um, are you really that dense? Do they not teach statistics or advanced math in Canada? The point of looking at stats is not that it will control the outcome but that these correlations exist for some reason.

To sit there and say that it's meaningless that 15% of road teams have won Game 7 and less than 10 % of teams down 3-1 have come back to win the Series when your team faces both of these statistical obstacles is absurd.

As far as Rule Changes, this is hardly the first time the rules have changed in NHL hockey.

Yeah probably cuz that stat means that teams who blow a 3-1 lead are just below 50% in Game 7s. That pales in comparison to the other numbers.

Quite the showcase this series turned out to be. Easily the best of the past 10 years. Hats off go to both Edmonton and Carolina for leaving it all out on the ice. All that was missing was an overtime.

I was hoping they'd learned their lesson after crowning Giguere Conn Smyth material in 2003 . Broduer had THREE SHUTOUTS IN THE FINAL that year, and yet they essentially gave it to a giant marshmellow. In all honesty Chris Pronger was the best player in the playoffs and it should have went to him, with Brind'amour as my second choice. It's such a cop out to give it too the goalie. Ward was great but he wasn't drop dead spectacular or anything. Carolina won the cup because their offense.

Netphorian Gadabout
06-20-2006, 01:18 PM
If I was voting for the Conn Smyth, I probably would have went with Pisani. Brind'Amore, if you insist on giving it to a player from the winning team.
