50 Worst Things To Ever Happen To Music

44. Rock poets
Memo to aspiring rock stars: Lyrics do not constitute poetry. Neither do pedestrian observations your life-coach thinks are profound. And despite what Jim Morrison seemed to believe, disturbed Freudian ramblings you howl while waving your dick around onstage are also, alas, not poetry. Please “cc” Jewel, Billy Corgan and Jeff Tweedy on this memo.

Well, they're wrong - quite a lot of Billy's lyrics are not bad at all.

:erm:

they're not dissing his lyrics, they're dissing his poetry...the whole point of that paragraph is that there is a difference between the two. they're saying that good lyrics do not equal poetry. so in a way, they are sorta complimenting his lyrics (if you read between the lines).

Fuck you, I meant all his written stuff (yes, lyrics and Blinking with Fists).

Then you should have said so, especially when the whole point of that comment in the article is that there is a difference between the two.

And do these rock journalists and critics think worthless opinions are poetry?

jeff tweedy's book was pretty good. i bought it and liked quite a few of the poems, especially the one about opening presents, how he describes the unwrapped presents as "degifted"

I had Billy sign my copy of Blinking With Fists when he was doing the signing tour, and I don't think I've even read one of the poems, except maybe while in line to get the book signed. I guess I've just never even felt compelled. Are there any worth reading??

Also, fuck Blender. Maybe if I was a Mariah Carey fan I might give a shit, at which point in time I'd rather be dead.

Some are. It was interesting to read some of the poems and connect them to stories he was telling on his MySpace confessions.

Billy's lyrics are indeed some of the best out there, but this magazine's just saying that he (and others) should stay away from writing poetry. I can't speak for Jewel's lyrics or poetry, I haven't read into any of it... But the hell with Blender.

While it's nice that artists like to think of themselves as multitalented in every arena they venture into, it simply isn't the case always and that's a good thing too since they need someone to humble them from time to time and we plebeians sure can't. :banging:

Who gives a fuck about critics? They obviously have no life and always have to butt in on everyone elses. FUCK E! NEWS also.

Blinking with Fists is worth reading once just for the experience. If nothing else, read The Others, it's heartbreaking.

Hard to say what is art.
Hard to say what is poetry.
Hard to say if it's good or not.

Bob Dylan has always been called a poet and he's just a musician, so who cares as long as some people are touched.

First of all, you don't put poetry out there because you think you're the best poet ever, you put poetry out there because you're an artist. No one has to like it or buy it, but Billy gets more press than 99% of the bad poets out their because of his name.

Secondly, exactly who are the great modern poets? These people who criticize can't answer that for themselves half the time. Poetry is such a b.s. eye-of-the-beholder sort of art anyway, they just love to criticize musicians for writing poetry because it's so easy... so who cares what those people say.
