Neighbours. Home And Away. Silverchair. Sheilas' Wheels. Australia has so many fine cultural exports, yet all you guys seem to have is Zane Lowe. Why is this?

They've got me.

Not, but seriously, with more sheep than homosapiens what can you expect?

Now if OMC released a new album, Zane Lowe could do the 'hardass' voiceover for the commercial and it would be an NZ tour-de-force

you know ...

Zane lowe was one of my favourite music journalists back in late 90's - he asked intelligent questions, did his research etc etc - easily the best that the tv station he worked for had on offer, and a darn sight better than the majority of print and broadcast music journos at the time ...

then they canned the music tv station he worked for and replaced it with god awful British MTV ... subsequently Zane got a job with them and adopted the whole new silly-funny-guy routine, and subsequently lost a bit of cred as far as I was concerned

I dont know what he's up to anymore - I truly hope he's gone back to doing some worthwhile journalism

He's on Radio 1! I don't know if that's a good thing, he's on at the precarious late-evening/early-night slot.

I actually prefer when he's being silly, because at least he's down to earth and he can actually connect with the bands - and like you said, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about. But he started with this attitude, trying to be really serious and cool and I don't know, aggressive or something, and he just comes off as a tremendous dick. Especially in interviews, it makes you cringe, because you can see people thinking 'who the hell is this idiot'. It's so forced and embarrassing

Fixed for pix

Actually, I can't tell the difference between NZ and Aussie accents anyway, so maybe some of these gems are actually from New Zealand anyway and I'm misattributing them. I mean I have my suspicions sometimes, but I never know for sure

Aussie and kiw accents are quite similar but the key is in the vowels ... whilst Aussie exagerate their vowel sounds, kiwis tend to drop their vowels

Chips ... in an Aussie accent = cheeps, in a Kiwi accent = chups/chops
Milk ... Aussie = Meelk, Kiwi = Mulk

The only thing I know abotu Radio 1 is Giles Petersons Worldwide show which occasionally has some itneresting DJ sets ...

Is 'breezeblock' a Radio 1 thing as well?

Well I heard that Australian accents are basically derived from English ones, but because NZ was settled by a bunch of Scots instead you guys ended up having a Scottish influence instead. I just need to hear a few people talking when I know where they're from

Yeah the Breezeblock's a Radio 1 thing - basically they play crap during the day, and interesting stuff at night. It's basically your generic chart music station until about... well I don't know what time exactly, that's why Zane Lowe's kinda on the cusp. I never really cared for his MTV show, but then it's MTV so I don't know how much say he got in that
