It's for the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song. It looks different, less lo-fi then their previous videos. Maybe they have an actual director this time instead of just Wayne or Brad Beasley...

Mystic comes out in a week... I have avoided downloading it to keep my ears fresh, so I can't wait! :dammit:

I'm just thankful I'm not some jaded indie fag who gets bored with albums by bands I claim to respect two months before they even get released. I swear, music downloading has turned music into a disposable commodiity much more than MTV or shit. I don't understand how anyone claiming to be Lips fan could be dissapointed with this album. IT'S THE LIPS MAN!!!

if i went out and bought this album on release day without having heard it beforehand i'd still think it was boring. implying that people are "jaded indie fags" and that music downloading is perilous are total non sequiturs

what's next? "either you get it or you don't"?

Nuh huh. I'm not accusing you specifically. Everyone is perfectly entitled be bored of something... But in general I am sick and tired of the same people, of whom download 50 billion albums a week, flatly dismissing new releases by established bands without offering any substantive criticism. There seems to be this scourge of music consumer out there that holds known and respected bands to an impossible standard while a great heap of the stuff they like to name drop isn't really anything special (like this one guy extolling the Sprouts as being better than everything, holy shit!). Music is like this great big bowl of popcorn that they keep relentlessly stuffing their faces with without ever slowing down and appreciating anything. Strictly in the colloquial sense, I've always found the usage of "Boring" too be synonomous with "short attention" span. The Flaming Lips for example aren't new, they have a solid catalogue of music... So it's almost like they have to make a flat-out knock your socks off irreffutable masterpeice just to get a shred of "hey, this is decent" by these people. AWWTM isn't that album, but I think it does a good job of being a good Flaming Lips album. So yay for me!!!1

You make some relevant points. I can't really understand the downloading 2000 albums in a year thing. Last year I listened to 45 albums the entire year and I felt like that was an absolute crapload.

On the other hand, someone could go and buy a billion albums a week and that would be just as retarded (going on your argument that people don't give anything time to sink in). Something leaking 2 months before doesn't change whether or not something is shit.

Don't worry though, I see what you're saying.

That's weird... the consensus on like 3 other internet messageboards is that it was average upon first listens, then after a few more it gets better and better, to the realization that it's great... And I don't know about you, but that was my view on Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi...

They're jaded indie fags for totally different reasons. One being that most bands they choose to listen to these days can't even assemble one full decent album, which makes being fickle towards bands easy and even beneficial.

I see what you mean, but for me, them being a well known band has nothing to do with them having to make a great album for me to appreciate it. "The Soft Bulletin" and "Yoshimi" are two of my favorite albums, so for me, my expectations of the Flaming Lips are significantly higher than my expectations for most other bands.

If an indie band I've never heard of releases an album that isn't great but I enjoy it, I may value that album more than I would this Flaming Lips album. Even if the Flaming Lips album actually is better than the indie band's album, I'd still deem the Flaming Lips album a disappointment because of my raised expectations, while the indie band's album would be considered a pleasant surprise. I think that's a pretty good (if somewhat confusing) explanation. It has nothing to do with being a jaded indie fag or whatever. I don't even listen to that much indie music.

Yes. I must concede that my diatribe was purely directed at an amorphous strawman of anyone who seems dismissive of AWWTM. Deep down ones desire to be right supercedes ones obligation to be relevent... The angle you raise I think is an important one to consider because you kind of see this kind of thing in the Pumpkins community where more often than not, a persons favorite Pumpkin album is the first one they heard (or, the one than hooked them in more or less). Most long time fans cringe at all the young kids who came along in the Machina era claiming that Machina was their best album... For the long time followers of the band it wasn't enough that Machina was Pumpkins making Pumpkins music (though we all reached the consensus that it was of lower quality than we'd of liked). But the thing is that most of us don't care that Siamese Dream has terrible lyrics, is a little bit flat production wise etc . It's alot easier to overlook the shortcomings of something when your first experience with it is untainted. You tend to evaluate later albums alot more intellectually than you would say, the first time Cherub Rock pounded your head in. So in this sense expectations aren't unfair so much as they frame your listening approach in a completely different manner. .
