View Full Version : Wine suggestion
bardy 03-02-2006, 02:51 PM What's a nice wine that would go well with sushi?
I am partial to sweeter (not really dry) wines. And preferably something not really expensive and something that would be available in most grocery stores.
souvenir 03-02-2006, 02:57 PM I'm no sushi lover or even connoisseur, but I thought sake would go better with sushi than any wine.
wHATcOLOR 03-02-2006, 03:00 PM i suggest that you drink poison
yeah, generally sake is the approved drink of sushi eaters...
and it is available in stores, and is often sweet if served properly.
17 Seconds 03-02-2006, 03:03 PM I heard those wines in a box are pretty nice.
BlueStar 03-02-2006, 03:04 PM Most sushi places also serve plum wine, in addition to sake. No idea, though, about brands of such wine or where to purchase it. However, I imagine that something like a pinot grio could maybe possible work. Of course, I've never tried that with sushi.

Oh wait, Beverages & More does have a selection of sake. www.bevmo.com They also have plum wine.
bardy 03-02-2006, 03:08 PM hmmm I've never had sake and I dont know what kinds are any good? are you supposed to serve it warm? blah. I don't think I am eating any sushi, but my friends are going to be eating sushi and I wanted to be able to share. Maybe I will just get some nice red wine and say fuck them!
mv2007 03-02-2006, 03:18 PM If you want a pretty good, light white wine - look for Luna di Luna Chardonnay/Pinot Grigio (here's their website so you can see the bottle - www.lunadiluna.com) You want the one in the blue bottle. It's at almost every grocery store & costs $8-10 per bottle. I've served it several times when cooking for others and, for not being that expensive, always goes over well. Especially good when chilled in the fridge for a while. Hope this helps!
kristin xp 03-02-2006, 03:18 PM moseland risling (14)
or
kendal jackson chardonnay (20)
or
a berringer if you wanna go like 8 bucks a bottle
bardy 03-02-2006, 03:46 PM thanks guys, I'm going to the store now.
wHATcOLOR 03-02-2006, 03:50 PM hope you enjoy the poison
wHATcOLOR 03-02-2006, 03:50 PM because it will make you dead!!!!!!! hahhahha!!!
When I've bought wine I just get some type of california wine cause it's cheap and doesn't taste bad. And gets you really drunk.
Grumble 03-02-2006, 05:30 PM I'VE NEVER HAD SUSHI.
Am I missing out?
Celes 03-02-2006, 05:34 PM I find sushi very bland. But everyone else I know who's eaten it loves it....
it's worth trying I guess.
it's very good.
you have to eat the right things, and go to a place that actually has good fish though.
there's always rolls too, man, they can be elaborate and rich.
Nimrod's Son 03-02-2006, 05:36 PM Yeah, it should be sake. and traditionally in Japan, sake is not served warm.. it is either chilled or room temperature
mercurial 03-02-2006, 05:38 PM chardonnays are on the money as far as an easily accesible grape to partner seafood goes - personally though I tend to stay away from chardys
gwurztraminers are my preference when it comes to seafood - beautiful pungent, delicate, sweet grape, and strikes a nice balance between a dry chardy and a heavy sav blanc ... you may need to go to a wine shop for this though
Yeah, it should be sake. and traditionally in Japan, sake is not served warm.. it is either chilled or room temperature
i'm pretty sure it just depends on the type of sake
I'm having sushi for my birthday next week. I also had it last friday. California rolls are my favorite food item. I recommend at least trying some of those babies.
Nimrod's Son 03-02-2006, 05:39 PM i'm pretty sure it just depends on the type of sake
no, warm sake is an american thing
like you can't go to china and get Orange Chicken

Any south african sauvignon. (white obviously lmao )
Grumble 03-02-2006, 05:40 PM I've got a real lust for fish now.
My housemate has a pet goldfish, and he's gone out for the night...
then why are they always warming it up in those warmy things in the japanese movies?! WHY ARE THE MOVIES LYING TO ME!?
or are they just bringing it to room temp faster, maybe? HMMMm..
oh, and am i the only one who really doesn't like california rolls? (except spicy ones.. they're good)
Nimrod's Son 03-02-2006, 05:44 PM I dunno. I watched a documentary on sake on the discovery channel a few months ago.. also I dated a japanese girl and her dad who was from Japan used to always say that
Shrimp tempura rolls are also good. And alaska rolls.
I dated a japanese girl
Way to go.
mercurial 03-02-2006, 05:46 PM Any south african sauvignon. (white obviously lmao )
savs are too heavy - you want something delicate to match subtle dishes like sushi
savs are better with stronger flavours like mussels etc
Grumble 03-02-2006, 05:47 PM God I'm hungry.
kristin xp 03-02-2006, 05:51 PM i had hot watermelon sake and it was AWESOME! normally i just have water with sushi haha.
i like the volcano roll that has cream cheese shrimp and avacado with hot sauce mmm so delicous!
PkPhuoko 03-02-2006, 05:52 PM Any south african sauvignon. (white obviously lmao )
that plus sushi or any rice would be horrendous
I had a dragon roll one time but I don't remember what it was like.
killer_tomato 03-02-2006, 05:55 PM uh many people drink warm sake in japan in the winter
this is a retarded thread by the way
Nimrod's Son 03-02-2006, 05:56 PM Way to go.
well, half japanese really
PkPhuoko 03-02-2006, 05:57 PM uh nimrod many people drink warm sake in japan in the winter
when I was in Osan they served it warm quite a bit... then again Osan caters to americans
Cathrine Wheel 03-02-2006, 05:59 PM I'm no sushi lover or even connoisseur, but I thought sake would go better with sushi than any wine.
Sake is wine.
Luke de Spa 03-02-2006, 05:59 PM wheat beer
I could ask my brother, he's been to Japan and probably had saki there. Oh sake.. whatever
killer_tomato 03-02-2006, 06:00 PM thanks for your contribution, dead
I think generally speaking, warm Sake = cheap and cold Sake = premium. The typical hot Sake they serve you is almost always the cheapest available.
mercurial 03-02-2006, 06:22 PM so Clint, would you go with crack, or smack as a match for a nice sushi?
PkPhuoko 03-02-2006, 07:08 PM i dont believe sake is considered a wine but more of a rice drink.... you dont have to have a liquor license to sell it
PkPhuoko 03-02-2006, 07:09 PM so Clint, would you go with crack, or smack as a match for a nice sushi?
heroin.... heroin and anything asian goes great together... i prefer fried rice and a few caps
I'm probably too late for this and it seems sake would be the thing for sushi, but if you're ever looking for something on the cheapish side that's sweeter and goes well with lighter foods/seafood, etc., Marques de Caceres' Satinela is a good one.
souvenir 03-02-2006, 08:38 PM Sake is wine.
no it's not
Sake is a beverage fermented from rice, which is a grain. This would make it more of a beer than a wine. Yet, sake is not carbonated, and flavor-wise is closer to wine than beer, although it is indeed uniquely different from wine. Sake is not a distilled beverage, and is not even remotely related to gin, vodka or other spirits.
A nice riesling probably would be the best match for sushi
DeadSwan 03-02-2006, 11:57 PM a nice chilean sauvignon blanc
DeviousJ 03-03-2006, 03:46 PM no, warm sake is an american thing
like you can't go to china and get Orange Chicken
Yeah sorry man, but you can have it hot warm or cold
bardy 03-03-2006, 04:45 PM I got two botltes of the luna di luna stuff and it was pretty good... especially for the price.
but I ended up drinking about 1.5 bottles of wine ugh
DeviousJ 03-03-2006, 05:04 PM Moon of the moon?
