My dads a big classic rock guy. Likes things like Bob segar and the stones and eric clapton, he is also embarisingly a huge fan of rod stewart. He's probably heard me play every pumpkin album twelve times through in the house and has never commented on them once. One time I watched viephoria with my dad in the room and he started randomly imitating Billy during the I am one performance when he's all like "GIMME GIMME GIMMEE GIMMEE GET GET NOTHING" its pretty funny.

My mom is a big fan of Wound, With every light, Soma, tonight tonight and 33. She also really digs the "To love somebody" cover on tfe. She is great.

My mom and dad own every Pumpkins album and a number of singles (including TAFH). They also own both Vieuphoria and the Music Video collection DVDs.
They have also both been to see the Pumpkins and Zwan live.

It is hard to rebel when your parent's like the same music as you.......

Sometimes I think my dad is cooler than I am..........

my mom likes b0lly lots... thinks he's pretty darn talented, so anytime i put something on when she's visiting, she's more than happy to listen - especially if i have something 'new'

my dad was so-so about 'em, but as soon as i sent him adore, he was glued to their music... especially got into the older stuff... he is also responsible for getting me hooked on the cure as a child and i suppose i repaid the favor

... NEITHER has seen them live... i think they are getting too old for that kid stuff, lol

my parents were typically... indifferent. my mom thought they were alright. that's all.

My mom dislikes them. In fact when we ride in my car and I play them she pitches a fit and always says corgan sounds like a dying cow.

However, when I still lived at home and played my blue heaven for her, she really liked it.

My parents think they are okay, my dad likes SD, and my mom likes the mellow stuff, she liked some Zwan too. She says that Billy reminds her of Tom Petty.

My mom likes SD. I popped it in one time while driving and she was really getting into it. She said it's good music to drive to. She also likes TFE. My dad's passed, I think he would've liked sp.

The one time I did this years ago, my dad walked in from work and he was all irritated for a while and finally said he didn't come home just to listen to all that angry shouting. And almost any time I mention playing some SP he talks about angry shouting.

when i first got into them (i was 14) my dad didn't want me listening to them... he thought their music was too depressing and was going to have an effect on my mental attitude. But he started to notice that the music was something i was into, and that it really just helped me relax through all those troubled teen years.

My mom LOVES Adore. I remember coming home one day, and she was cleaning the house while adore was being blasted on the stereo system. Imagine watching a 40 something year old woman scrubbing the floors to appels + oranjes, it was priceless. Whenever I'm around she wants me to play for martha on the piano, as well as MCIS.I also remember watching the 94 lost tapes on the vieuphoria dvd, Snail is playing, my mom walks in and says "god, he's got such a beautiful voice."

Yeah the band was so friggin tight. I started crying when Billy sang: Let me die, For rock and roll. I got chills and all. It was insane.

My Dad bought SD when he was in Sam the Record Man and Disarm came on. He said it gave him a chill down the spine like so few other songs could. I don't think he was really that into the rest of the album. He likes particular songs by them (Tonight, Tonight) and a few others, I'm sure. He's just not very vocal about it. He really liked the Machina Acoustic Demos though. He likes music where there's just a guy with his guitar singing (a big fan of Dylan and Cohen).

I only let my mom listen to the lighter stuff of SP (Sweet, Sweet - Luna - The Last Song - MCIS - Cupid De Locke), 'cause she can't stand anything loud.

Overall I'd say they're pretty indifferent to the band. One time though, I was watching Viewphoria, and my Dad was watching Billy during the "I Am One" rant-a-long. He turned to me and said, "Billy's an acid nut, huh?"

my parents are indifferent. they do recognize the music though. When i played TFE they asked "is this smashing pumpkins?"

And they save newspaper articles for me, which is nice. Especially durign the years I left Chicago for college.

My mom thinks that anything heavier than Shania Twain is like death metal or something, and stubbornly refuses to be open-minded. So naturally, she considers the Pumpkins death metal, and therefore a thorn in civilized culture. Although one time I snuck Adore onto a 1-hour car trip with her, and she didn't say anything until the end when I asked her how she enjoyed the Smashing Pumpkins, and she was like "oh, THAT's what that was. I was wondering, because I didn't like it at all."

My Dad's pretty indifferent. Sometime's I'll put it on in the car and he won't mind at all. And he's explicitly said he likes "Tonight, Tonight".

Both my ol' folks were into the 50's standard, beatles and the carpenters. Though my dad also liked the drumming of ben goodman and the four aces, he thinks of "silverfuck" as "salsa metal." LMAO :D

I like this thread. My dad acts like I'm a fag for being so into the Pumpkins although he does like the fact that he has taken a spiritual turn.

My mom hated it at first but my family has a rule, if your driving and paying for the gas, you control the music and in time she has grown to like it. 1979 is one of her favorite songs of all time. I took her out for coffee the other day and she sat in the car while I was getting it. I forgot that I left the dial up. Usually when a heavy song comes on I turn it down. I get back in the car and she was tapping to XYU! She is very supportive of SP but my dad hates it. Although he does like Slunk alot.

My father got me into them, kind of. He bought MCIS for Bullet when it first came out (he heard the radio debut of Bullet on...he says, the King Biscuit Flower Hour?) and anyway he likes a lot of their harder stuff but hold the opinion that anything not hard rock is pretty much not worth listening. He constantly accuses Billy of treating his fans badly and being egotistical, and ever since the announcement that the Pumpkins would be returning, he has done nothing but tell me, "Billy is broke, he just wants a paycheck" Poor guy doesn't understand that the Smashing Pumpkins were a band from a generation of music that disregarded all that. He's never gotten over when Aerosmith sold out.

My mom likes themm good enough. She loves some of the softer stuff, but actually complained that TFE wasn't hard enough.

My Mum gets a kick out of dropping SP as a 'hip' reference, which cracks me up.. parents being cool with the younger genration, v. sweet.

When I saw Corgan a week ago I made friends with a girl (Hi Xina and family!! :) whose Dad had shouted her and her Mum a plane trip up and a weekend out for the concert, the parents were total fans and thought it would make a great family outing to see Corgan with their daughter, how cool is that?? The Mum was the most lively thing at the concert too, she was having a blast.

Haha, what an excellent family.

my dad says the pumpkins have some good music, im always playing them when im around him. he plays the keyboard, and he likes mellon collie and the infinite sadness(the song). he says they have some good tunes, he doesn't know the names just knows the voice.

my mom or dad can't stand his voice... but they both like the radio-type songs like Tonight, Tonight, 1979, Disarm, Today... and my mom likes To Forgive.

they both like storyteller artists... like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Harry Chapin, etc... so thats why SP doesn't really float their boat.

my mom is all churchy, so she's never let me have any "wordly" music growing up.
but they let me watch anything that came on t.v. about them.

she doesn't like them, but she'll listen and atleast pretend to care whenever i mention them/billy.

my dad likes beatles, ac/dc, ect and he always tries to get my goat, calling billy a fag or a loser.
he also entertains me when i update them on what's new with billy, acts like he cares.
he likes a few of the singles and i'm pretty sure i burned the greatest hits a long time ago for him. i doubt he still has it.

Clifford J likes a song here and there. He would let me play sp in the car, took me, mirrar, xtina and todd white to chicago for the last shows. He went to one of their shows in detroit with me and when i coudln't get a ticket for a show here in toronto, he begged on the streets for one and paid way too much for it.

He's been more supportive of me and my obsession rather than a fan himself.

Everytime he hears about billy now or seems him he'll say "ooh, that Billy Corgan guy. You're not still into HIIIIIIM are you?"

hahaha

My parents' interests in different musical groups halted in the 70's. They were into the Beatles, Led Zep, Rush, BOC, The Animals, The Doors, and so on.

I remember one time when the "Today" video was playing on MTV and my mom said, "My God that music grates on my damn nerves!"

I'm here to say, my husband and I both ARE cool parents.
Our baby daughter listened to SP while she was in the womb, and when she came out. As a baby, her favorite song she stopped crying to was Rhinocerous.
She's nearing 3 now, and if you put anything SP on, she's rockin' out. If I put the videos on, she's right up there watching them and dancing. (Except try try try lol )

Show her a picture of billy and she says "Billwy". Damn it makes me laugh but whatever...

So yeah, we are gonna be the cool parents... ;)

my dad helped me to get my first "boot" since he hooked me on a radio recording of the chicago riviera concert. he told me the pumpkins were on the radio on some national news station with the track "lily".
he dig "hummer", especially the end which reminds him of some irish song ...
i guess he likes me seeing me playing my SP vinyls on his old turntable every time i come home.

mom likes "zero" despite the fact she can't really stand heavy music ... i play her "my blue heaven" so she can't complain.

My mom never really comments on my music because she hates it all. But, she is a really big Fleetwood Mac fan and she absolutely hates Billy's version of "Landslide", saying the same thing most people say , "I can't stand his voice." But what does she know she's also a Cyndi Lauper fan.
