A man has been shot at Stockwell Tube station by armed police officers.

Passenger Mark Whitby told BBC News he had seen an Asian man shot five times by "plain-clothes police officers" with a handgun.

Passengers were evacuated from the Northern Line station in south London. Police have also cordoned off surrounding streets.

Eyewitnesses say armed police have surrounded a mosque in east London that has been evacuated after a bomb scare.

Police are hunting four would-be bombers after Thursday's London blasts.

The bombers fled after detonators went off, causing small blasts, but failed to detonate the bombs themselves.

Services on the Victoria and Northern lines have been suspended following a request by the police, London Underground said.

Ambulances including an air ambulance have been sent to the scene.

Mr Whitby, told BBC News: "I was sitting on the train reading my paper.

"I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'!

"I saw an Asian guy run onto the train hotly pursued by three plain-clothes police officers.

"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him.

"I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy - he's dead."

Passenger Briony Coetsee said: "We were on the Tube and then we suddenly heard someone say, 'Get out, get out' and then we heard gunshots."

Mark Whitby said: "I was sitting on the train... I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'.

"I saw an Asian guy. He ran on to the train, he was hotly pursued by three plain clothes officers, one of them was wielding a black handgun.

"He half tripped... they pushed him to the floor and basically unloaded five shots into him," he told BBC News 24.

"As [the suspect] got onto the train I looked at his face, he looked sort of left and right, but he basically looked like a cornered rabbit, a cornered fox.

"He looked absolutely petrified and then he sort of tripped, but they were hotly pursuing him, [they] couldn't have been any more than two or three feet behind him at this time and he half tripped and was half pushed to the floor and the policeman nearest to me had the black automatic pistol in his left hand.

"He held it down to the guy and unloaded five shots into him.

Heavy coat

"He had a baseball cap on and quite a sort of thickish coat - it was a coat you'd wear in winter, sort of like a padded jacket.

"He might have had something concealed under there, I don't know. But it looked sort of out of place with the sort of weather we've been having, the sort of hot humid weather.

"He was largely built, he was quite a chubby sort of guy.

"I didn't see any guns or anything like that - I didn't see him carrying anything. I didn't even see a bag to be quite honest.

"I got into the ticket hall. I was approached by a policeman and London Underground staff asking me if I needed counselling.

"I was just basically saying I've just seen a man shot dead. I've seen a man shot dead. I was distraught, totally distraught. It was no less than five yards away from where I was sitting. I actually saw it with my own eyes."

'SUICIDE BOMBER' SHOT
Police have shot a suspected suicide bomber at a tube station in south London.

Armed officers opened fire up to six times on the suspect as he hurdled a ticket barrier and raced along a platform at Stockwell station.

Police screamed at passengers to evacuate and are thought to have shot the suspect as he stumbled on to a train. It is believed the man was killed.

Alarmed onlookers said they saw up to 10 plain-clothed officers chasing an Asian-looking man before opening fire.

Reports said the suspect was pushed to the ground and shot five times at close range.

Passenger Briony Coetsee said: "We were on the tube and then we suddenly heard someone say 'get out, get out' and then we heard gunshots."

Air and road ambulance crews have been sent to the scene and unconfirmed reports suggest the man was involved in Thursday's assault on the capital.

If the suspect is confirmed to be a suicide bomber, it would mark the fifth attempted terrorist attack on London in less than a day.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm that just after 10am armed officers shot a male at Stockwell underground station."

Police have been given orders to shoot to kill if they believe someone is about to detonate a bomb.

Sky News Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "The officer or officers involved in this clearly felt this suspect was about to detonate a bomb."

Tube services on the Victoria and Northern Lines were suspended at the request of police.

An earlier bomb threat targeting a mosque in east London has been given the all-clear by police.

LOL well if that's the case he should have stopped running from plain clothes policemen shouting "stop, we are police, we WILL shoot"

apparently a large section of harrow road is now blocked off and two women of morrocoan descent have been led into police vans :/

after what happened in london yesterday and 2 weeks ago yesterday, even if he didn't speak english, he'd have heard from friends that i wasn't a particularly good idea for an asian guy to run through an underground station away from groups of people pulling guns on him. this is the uk, people don't just jump about with handguns and smgs!

I guess the justification is going to be that he was a suspected terrorist (which he apparently was), they pursued him while telling him to stop, he didn't, and then he ran onto a subway train. Given the shenanigans lately they probably assumed he was heading for his target, and killed him before he could detonate a bomb on the train.

Still, this is pretty unprecedented

I don't doubt his stupidity for running, but there are such things as ARREST and QUESTIONING. You don't just shoot a fucker after you've forced him on the ground. Why don't we just ditch the whole criminal process?

And like I said, if he was a suspected terrorist and they see him head for the tube, they try to stop him and he bolts for the train, forcing him onto the ground isn't going to stop him reaching for a detonator and fulfilling his mission. I'm not saying they were right to do it but I can see why they made that decision

or are you saying someone in london would be less likely to place great value on their life because after all, its brought them to london

I think understanding how a gun works is a key point in the reasoning behind trying to escape from a guy wielding said weapon!

I don't think the cops should be charged with anything, but I don't think that shooting and killing him was the best way to handle it. But hey, in that position, especially because of the fucked up situation over there, they probably didn't think they had much choice. They were just doing their job I guess.

Well I'm not really in a position to say what they should have done with whatever information they had, but the cops can't go around shooting anyone who runs away from them because I'd imagine that happens a lot, especially since these were plain-clothes guys waving guns around. I think charges being brought is just part of a formal investigation into the incident. I wonder what'll happen to the intelligence people who marked him as a suspect...

I just hope that it wouldn't make the policemen hesitant to pull the trigger when it happens next time and the dude will happen to be a real terrorist.

I kinda have to think if he'd been carrying a big ol' bomb under that coat it would have gone to press by now. I mean, if I were the London 5-0 I'd want people to know the shooting was justified somehow. 'Course, maybe they just figured he was dangerously overheated in that coat. So they ventilated him.
